Spotify just released their 2023 Fan Study.
This slide on "How people discover podcasts" is interesting.
Most of these align with past studies we've seen.
The notable addition is "browsing Spotify," which (they say) accounts for 50% of new podcast discovery on their platform.
@transistor but, where's YouTube? Every new survey surely has shown that to be a top discovery mechanism!
most podcasts are audio-only , no YouTube or any other video:
video is too much work and most podcasters are too ugly
@csb Missing my point. All the 'surveys' recently claim YouTube is where people 'discover' podcasts. Of course we know it's not true.
Yez, you’re right
albeit most YouTube channels don’t have audio-only podcasts, example:
— decent Russian has no audio only podcast: https://youtube.com/@INSIDERUSSIA , probably doesn’t even know what podcast is
— Bandrew ( #NoAgenda knight) has very popular YouTube channel about microphones: https://youtube.com/@Podcastage but also has audio only variant thereof: https://podcastindex.org/podcast/6561992 .
So in most cases it’s “podcast” discovery on YouTube , podcast in quotation marks , not real podcasts
@adam Yes, that is suspicious that YouTube isn't on Spotify's list.
Maybe it was multiple choice, and they didn't include it?
@transistor I have a hunch that "Browsing Spotify" is just what they assign all their unattributable first listens to.
