New data! My ranking of top podcast hosting companies based on the 1.9 million new eps in May 2024

Since there are a very clear top 3 (Spotify for Podcasters, Spreaker, Buzzsprout), I added another graph without them to see the others more clearly.

@js but where is @Castopod? It never appears on this list!

@dwev @js @Castopod @js
...and it will NEVER appear: "We use the actual media file url"
It does not use the "generator" tag from the RSS feed.
So each self hosted podcast on Castopod counts as one different host company. 🤦
I've been complaining about that for years but it seems that no one hears me screaming...
This is REALLY discouraging...
When I give up on all that you'll know why. 🤬

@benjaminbellamy @dwev @js @Castopod Does this mean that e.g. the WordPress on that list is only for wordpress.com, noe anyone who publish podcasts using a self hosted WordPress?

Guy Martin (Dwev) :pc2red:

@aslakr @benjaminbellamy @dwev@mstdn.dk @js @Castopod it’s using the url of the enclosed media, so if you’re serving media from s3 or Cloudflare, I’m not sure how it appears in the host stats - there is another chart for CDNs.

@dwev @aslakr @dwev@mstdn.dk @js @Castopod I am turning off notifications otherwise you'd hear me cursing all day long. I find all this extremely UNGRATEFUL and UNFAIR to everything we've been doing for this ecosystem and community for the past four years. All I'm thinking about now is completely removing OP3 from Castopod next release and never talk about it, ever again.

@benjaminbellamy @dwev @aslakr @dwev@mstdn.dk @js @Castopod I don't care about download metrics. IMHO they are irrelevant and the Emporer's new clothes. I read this paragraph from an old NPR document discussing RAD.

Downloads do not equal listens and there is no data about Listen Time, % Completed or Value Paid. The ONLY reason we still persist with this old legacy metric is it's the only metric hosts can offer podcasters. First-party data is with the apps.

@samsethi @benjaminbellamy @aslakr @js @Castopod you are right, Sam, but until the landscape changes there are still commercial decisions being made based on analytics like this, and if there are flaws in how the list is compiled, I think that’s important. Castopod makes it very easy to use OP3 - it’s literally a single toggle switch in the podcast admin - I don’t think any other host makes it easier. For them not to appear at all in the host ranking feels wrong.

@dwev @benjaminbellamy @aslakr @js @Castopod I agree Guy. James says the same, downloads are all we have which is a sad indictment. Again I agree let's fix what we have but I am 100% focused on better metrics with real measurement which is why I don't care about downloads. If others fix this great but it's still a pointless metric and made worse by an IAB certification that costs a lot of money and delivers no value.

I agree with Spotify who left the IAB. They have first party data.

@benjaminbellamy @dwev @aslakr @dwev@mstdn.dk @js @Castopod Benjamin and I are working on a RAD like listening measurement standard for podcasts using ActivityStreams and ActivityPub. From what I have read, the reason it failed is because RAD ignored the user and didn't reward the podcast creator. The ActivityStream file can be shared with other apps or hosts but only if the podcast wants to.

I read a new proposal for a RAD+ which again ignores the Apps and Podcasters?

@benjaminbellamy @dwev @aslakr @dwev@mstdn.dk @js @Castopod btw I think OP3 is amazing for Hosts but irrelevant for Advertisers and Apps.

@samsethi @benjaminbellamy @dwev @aslakr @dwev@mstdn.dk @Castopod

Sam, the livewire new episode reports have nothing to do with OP3, and I've been doing them since before OP3 was conceived

Not sure why they are being conflated - other than they both use a dark background and skinny line graphs!

The livewire reports look at the entire open podcast ecosystem, OP3 is only present on a very small number of them (which it also tracks btw)
